Short description:

AGRIFORVALOR is a Horizon 2020 Thematic Network working to close the research and innovation
divide within the bioeconomy by connecting primary producers and practitioners from agriculture and
forestry with research and academia as well as with associations and clusters, bio-industry, policy
makers; business support organizations, innovation agencies and technology transfer intermediaries
in multi-actor innovation partnership networks in order to valorise and exploit sidestream biomass
resources from agriculture and forestry.
The project has established multi-actor networks managed by three Biomass Innovation Design Hubs,
piloted in Spain (AndalucĂa), Ireland and Hungary. In each hub, existing research results and good
practices on valorisation of biomass sidestreams from agriculture and forestry are shared and matched
with the specific needs and potentials, with dedicated innovation support provided to multi-actor
innovation partnership (IP) groups, to enable the development of new business models.
AGRIFORVALOR builds on the principles of EIP AGRI and supports the effective exchange of existing
knowledge on innovative approaches to biomass sidestream valorisation and Bioeconomy
implementation for agriculture and forestry sectors.
During work packages 1-3, the three hubs, supported by partners, have collected and disseminated
case studies on best practice biomass sidestream valorisation, surveyed biomass sidestream potential
and opportunities in the three regions and worked with multi-actor stakeholder groups to identify new
potential biobased concepts and build innovation partnership groups.
In Work package 4, AGRIFORVALOR worked with these innovation partnership groups to facilitate the
development of new business models through tailored business supports on a range of topics to
support business model development. This included, workshop development mentoring, and business
model canvas development with the final development of 9 multi-actor projects across 3 hubs with a
minimum of 1 being submitted for further funding under EIP-Agri rural development funds (Task 4.7).
This report contains a summary of the business model methodology used in AGRIFORVALOR, business
models developed and analysis and awarding of best business model per hub. In total 10 Canvas were
produced by the three hubs, 3 each in Andalusia and Hungary and 4 in Ireland. The CANVAS were
developed in support of innovation partnership groups arising from task 2.3.1 and were collated using
a unique circular economy platform, encouraging participants to think about aspects including
upcycling and the breakdown of resources into natural, technological and energy resources. This
promotes a triple-P approach to business taking into account not only profits, but also people and
planet.
Three winning business models were finally selected by each hub management committee as overall
winners including:
Spain: Organic compost from olive mill residues
Hungary: Bark-based Insulation
Ireland: Small-scale Grass Biorefineries
