Objectives
Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA)
The SRIA for Advanced Biochemicals and Biomaterials addresses key research and innovation needs for transforming the BIOEAST region’s abundant biomass resources into competitive, high-value bio-based chemicals and materials. It covers the full value chain from sustainable feedstock mobilisation and biomass conversion to advanced materials and specialty products, with particular attention to bridging the gap between research and industrial implementation.
The strategy is organised into four main thematic areas:
- Assessment of sustainable feedstocks – mapping biomass and side streams, developing supply chains, sustainability and LCA frameworks, and strengthening regional bio-based value chains.
- Chemical and biotechnological transformation of biomass – developing advanced conversion technologies, flexible biorefineries, digital modelling and AI-based optimisation, and pilot and demonstration facilities.
- Bio-based platform chemicals and structural materials – developing biopolymers, natural fibre composites, bio-based polymer additives, polyurethanes, resins, adhesives and coatings.
- Bio-based specialty chemicals and materials – focusing on bioactive compounds, functional additives, smart materials, biomedical materials, nanomaterials and bio-based materials for energy storage.
Key activities
The activities of this TWG are centred around the following research and innovation pillars:
- Regular TWG meetings and coordination – bringing together TWG members to exchange information, monitor progress and coordinate activities in line with the Terms of Reference.
- Updating the Thematic SRIA – identifying emerging research and innovation needs, reviewing existing priorities and defining new strategic directions for advanced bio-based materials through participatory workshops and consultations.
- Stakeholder consultation and validation – involving TWG members, national mirror groups and wider stakeholder communities in the development and validation of research priorities at national and macro-regional level.
- Science–policy dialogue – organising and contributing to macro-regional dialogues that connect research and innovation priorities identified by the TWG with policymakers and relevant European and national initiatives.
- Cooperation with BIOEAST HUBs – exchanging knowledge and experience with national HUBs, strengthening links between thematic and national stakeholder communities, and supporting alignment between the Thematic SRIA and national Bioeconomy Action Plans.
- Cross-TWG collaboration – identifying synergies and cross-cutting research topics with other BIOEAST Thematic Working Groups and contributing to the update of the overall BIOEAST SRIA.
- Networking and community building – strengthening cooperation among researchers, industry, policymakers and other bioeconomy stakeholders across the BIOEAST macro-region and supporting new collaborations and joint initiatives.
- Strategic planning and sustainability – maintaining the TWG roadmap, monitoring progress and contributing to measures supporting the long-term operation and impact of the TWG.
Highlights and achievements
- Stronger science–policy interaction – the TWG has contributed to macro-regional science–policy dialogues, bringing research and innovation priorities closer to policy discussions and funding opportunities.
- Strengthened macro-regional network on advanced bio-based materials – the TWG provides an established platform connecting researchers, industry, policymakers and other stakeholders and facilitating knowledge exchange and new collaborations.
