BIOEAST

Slovenia

Slovenia has diverse natural resources for the bioeconomy, especially in agriculture, forestry and the processing industries. The use of biomass and other biological resources and the development of bio-based materials are based on the principles of circularity, sustainability and cascading resource use.

Bioeconomy Policy Framework

Bioeconomy policies and actions are spread across various national strategic documents, such as the Slovenian Development Strategy 2030, Sustainable Smart Specialisation Strategy, the Slovenian Agriculture and Food Strategy and the National Climate and Energy Plan. Key State institutions include the Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning and the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy. The State supports the bioeconomy through economic instruments, research, innovation and certification, while ensuring the sustainable use of biomass and the development of a circular bioeconomy.

Current bioeconomy strategies and development trends

Slovenia does not have a dedicated bioeconomy strategy, but it is included in the other strategic documents mentioned above. Under the BOOST4BIOEAST project, Slovenia will develop an action plan for the development of the bioeconomy by 2026.
