TWG on Forestry – BIOEAST

Objectives

The overall objective of the Forestry value chain Thematic Working Group of the BIOEAST initiative (BFWG or Forestry TWG) is to connect forestry science and policy in the CEE region. Forestry TWG supports BIOEAST vision to develop knowledge and cooperation based circular bioeconomies, while ensuring sustainability. The focus is on resilience of forests, sustainable forest management, productivity of the sector through conventional and innovative value chains. Forestry TWG sets research and innovation objectives through thematic SRIA, strives to set up frameworks for implementation of SRIA and collaborates with other relevant bodies in this context.

Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA)

TWG is responsible for developing and updating its thematic Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). This document serves as the roadmap for regional research, aligning macro-regional priorities with national bioeconomy Action Plans. SRIA is a living document, initially developed in the BIOEASTsUP project, undergoing updates reflecting trends in the sector.

Forestry SRIA is structured around thematic areas oriented to forests in changing conditions, primary production, processing industries, circularity, ecosystem services, communication and education.

Key activities

The activities of this TWG are centred around the following research and innovation pillars reflected in the thematic Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda:

Sustainable wood production chains
Keeping and further strengthening of traditional and development of high-tech wood processing industries
Forest resources in changing conditions
Forest ecosystem services and rural development
Recycling and cascading system of wood and wood products use
Education and communication
Paper-pulp technologies
