Poland

Poland’s agriculture sector is one of the largest in the EU, with about 60% of land used for farming and 29% covered by forests. The country is a major producer of cereals, potatoes, apples, and livestock products. Poland has strong scientific institutions and a growing innovation ecosystem supporting sustainable agriculture, forestry, and food systems—key enablers for building a resilient, circular bioeconomy. Positioned at the heart of Central and Eastern Europe, Poland plays an important role in shaping the region’s bioeconomy transformation.

Bioeconomy Policy Framework

In Poland, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is the main body responsible for bioeconomy-related policy at the national level. It works in collaboration with other ministries such as the Ministry of Climate and Environment and the Ministry of Education and Science.

Key supporting institutions include: Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation – State Research Institute (IUNG-PIB), which leads research in bioeconomy, agroecology, and sustainable farming systems.

Current bioeconomy strategies and development trends

Poland is actively engaged in EU-level initiatives, projects, and regional cooperation through the BIOEAST Initiative to support the bioeconomy transformation.
